ag6 Tomorrows Teachers

The aim of this programme is to offer those of you who might be considering a career in teaching (at Primary or Secondary) the opportunity to engage in realistic, hands-on observation and discussion of the various areas that make-up a teacher’s daily responsibilities.

The programme is based at ag6, with input from our partner Primary and High schools along with sessions delivered by Edge Hill University. At the end of the programme there is the opportunity to spend a day at the Faculty of Education where you will receive an official Edge Hill certificate summarising your involvement and achievement.

In addition you will have a mock interview, tour of the Edge Hill Campus and Education Faculty plus advice on completing UCAS applications. There will also be the chance to gain general advice and guidance about the various routes into a career in teaching.

The interview is carried out by Senior Initial Teacher Training lecturers who will offer students dedicated advice on how to prepare for their actual interview. As places at Edge Hill are increasingly competitive, taking part in ‘Tomorrow’s Teachers’
gives students that extra advantage!

Each session begins with a Senior Lecturer from Edge Hill setting the scene for that unit e.g. how to design a lesson or how to create to right atmosphere so that there are high expectations of the students.

Students then carry-out some observation in these fields across the programme with opportunities for weekly attachments to either Primary or High schools. The units end with another session where, as a group, students can discuss and reflect on their experiences.

The students will spend time with current Edge Hill Trainee Teachers so they can experience what it is like to train as a teacher at Alder Grange. Basically, ‘Tomorrow’s Teachers’ is about children, how they learn and how we can support them to realise their potential!

We want to give ag6 students the chance to get some experience of these ‘basics’ which include:
> Learning and Teaching: The tools of the trade!
> The structure of a good lesson plan.
> Key skills for effective lesson observing.
> Creating relationships that lead to
outstanding Behaviour for Learning.
> Behaviour for Learning and specific strategies
for effective behaviour.
